To all my Hummer EV Truck owners, what is your solution for a spare tire? Did you get one of the factory bed-mounted spare tire carriers, or are you living dangerously and just not driving with a spare? Has anyone had a flat and realized a spare would have been handy, or has it been a non-issue?

I caught a flat this week on interstate I-95 in Benson, North Carolina after hitting some object in a construction zone coming from Myrtle Beach.

Me and several others were stranded with huge gashes in our tires. My family and I were stranded for about 3 hours waiting on a tow truck. Dorman GMC was 5 miles away but would not help although it was only 3p EDT. They sent me to Bleeker Chevrolet who was willing to help but could not get the stock 305 55 r22 until the next business day. Ultimately that was the problem, there was no tire shop in the area that carried the stock Hummer tire. Every shop stated that it would take a day to get the tire.

I ended up finding a local shop named Tri State (Josh and Dakota, those guys were awesome) that came to me and removed my wheel, took it back to their shop and put on a used 305 LT35 r22 AT Renegade tire. These guys were just some good guys who stayed past 5p EDT closure of thier business to assist me. It cost me about $200 total including tips but I got my family home safely. Needless to say the tow truck arrived as soon as Dakota left with my wheel. However the tow truck guy from East Coast towing stayed and followed us just in case the used tire option failed.

Although, I was exhausted when I got home, I ordered the Hummer scissor jack from the GMC website. And a stock 18in Hummer wheel from Ebay. I will buy a used 305 70 r18 with good tread from a local shop when it is delivered. The used 22in wheels were 2-3 times the 18s in price and heavier than the 18in. It was still a lower cost for me to buy the 18in tire and wheel as a spare even though I have a used 22in tire.

Moral to the story, get you a spare tire. The stress of having to wait a day to get a tire on top of having my family stranded in 90 degree weather was a huge burden. Even getting towed via roadside assistance with GMC paying for my busted tire, does not lessen the burden of having my family stranded. Thank God we were in a safe location. I hope my bad luck helps save some other person from experiencing the same pain.

Side note there are several 10 ton Bottle Jack options available but those came with mixed reviews. The Hummer SUT is 4.5 tons so I ordered what is designed to work with my truck. I may order a hitch tire carrier or just carry the spare in my truck bed. Either way, Im not going to be stranded for that same reason again.

Ugh, sorry to hear about this! That's a big gash. Any idea what caused it?

Yah, it was pretty bad. it appeared to be a blown tractor trailer tire as we were in a really tight construction zone. I missed quite a few pieces of debris but we were running 70+ with the cement barriers on both sides of the 2-lanes vehicles around me.

The piece that I ran over was chunky enough to lift my back end. So it was something pretty significant. I assume the outer lining of the tractor trailer tire that connects to the rim.
