I could see the need for the length, but I think an 8" drop is way too much, especially since the HEV has adjustable air suspension. I would think a 4" to a max of 6" would be plenty.

Do you have a leaf blower or maybe an air compressor that you can use to blow out the charging port plug? You might try that to see if you can quickly dry out the plug and see if it resolves the issue.
